UNCOVERING THE TOP GARAGE FLOOR EPOXY MYTHSSeptember 1, 2015
Garage epoxy flooring looks neat, clean and modern; no wonder homeowners find it very attractive! Budget- savvy homeowners will naturally investigate the pros and cons of installing an epoxy floor coating. Today, we wanted to bust some of the most pervasive myths about this type of floor coating so that we can you make an informed decision about installing garage floor coatings.
1. PROFESSIONAL GARAGE FLOOR COATING IS EXPENSIVE
This is the biggest complaint we hear when we speak with people about hiring a professional to install epoxy garage floor coatings. We think these people are shortsighted: Yes, there is a cost associated with having garage epoxy flooring professionally installed. However, when you look at all the benefits, including the durability of professional floor coatings, you will find that professional installation is actually quite cost-effective compared to DIY.
2. YOU CAN JUST PAINT YOUR GARAGE FLOOR INSTEAD!
Some people think that epoxy is “just like paint” and they can therefore paint the garage floor themselves and get the same effect. In reality, epoxy is not very similar to paint. Epoxy has hardeners and resins that make it resistant to UV rays, scratches, and chemicals. Can paint do these same things?
3. ALL YOU NEED TO DO IS WASH YOUR GARAGE FLOOR, THEN IT’S READY FOR EPOXY!
This myth leads many homeowners to think they can DIY a garage epoxy coating. In reality, homeowners need to do much more than simply wash the floor. They must grind down the existing garage coating to create a rough surface that will better bond with the epoxy. DIY kits do not provide the tools or equipment to you, essentially setting you up to fail.
4. EPOXY KITS WORK JUST AS WELL!
As we just stated, epoxy kits do not provide the right caliber of equipment and tools for you to do a good job with this. Even if you are careful, and have experience with home repairs and renovations, the epoxy in your kit is less strong than that sold to professionals. As a result, DIY garage floor coatings will not be as durable as professionally installed garage floor coatings.
5. YOU’LL HAVE TO REDO YOUR FLOOR OFTEN!
This myth survives because people use DIY kits, which do not work very well, and then they need to redo their floor every few years. If you hire a pro to do it right the first time, you will not need to redo the epoxy coating every couple of years. Take it from us; it’s worth it to hire a professional.
