MURPHY BED INSTALLATION: 4 QUESTIONS TO ASK

July 29, 2017

Need more space in a room, but you don’t want to give up the bed? You might be amazed at the convenience and efficiency that Murphy beds could add to your home. With the answers to these Murphy bed installation questions, you will be ready to decide if a Murphy bed is right for your California home.

1. DO I HAVE SPACE FOR A MURPHY BED?
There are two areas of space that you need to measure for a Murphy bed: the area on the wall where the Murphy bed will sit when folded, and the room on the floor once it is opened up. Murphy beds are designed to take up very little space, but variations in size and design mean that different beds use varying amounts of space. Before you purchase the bed, take its measurements and make sure that the room will still be comfortable when the bed is down.

2. DO I NEED A NEW MATTRESS FOR MY MURPHY BED?
Many people worry about having to roll in the cost of a new mattress to fit with the Murphy bed of their choice. The truth of the matter is that you may not have to. In order for the mattress to fold away completely and securely, the mattress only needs to be less than 10 inches thick. If the existing mattress for that room is thicker, you can likely find a thinner option that is comfortable and budget-friendly.

3. HOW LONG WILL THE MURPHY BED INSTALLATION PROCESS TAKE?
One thing that may surprise you about having your Murphy bed installed is how quickly it happens. Installation time depends on the type of bed you select. If you choose a library Murphy bed with lots of shelving, it will take more time to assemble the bookcases and attach them securely to the Murphy bed framework. Murphy beds with minimal extras can often take a few hours or less for complete installation.

4. AM I QUALIFIED TO INSTALL MY OWN MURPHY BED?
Even the simplest Murphy bed designs call for an attentive eye and a fair bit of strength to install. You must put in the wall attachment securely so the bed does not fall down unexpectedly. Installing the bed, headboard, footboard, bed face, folding mechanism and any cabinetry on the sides of the bed are fairly straightforward for an experienced professional. However, if you are not an expert, you may save a lot of time and headache by hiring someone to do the hard work for you.
