4 GARAGE ORGANIZATION TIPS FOR EARLY SPRING CLEANING

March 15, 2015

Chilly temperatures may still hang in the air as the California winter comes to a close, but it’s not too early to get a head start on your spring cleaning efforts. Use these four garage organization tips to smoothly transition your garage from winter use into springtime use.

HANG IT UP
You’re not using those heavy coats as much anymore, but it’s still nice to have quick access without heaping them on the floor. Install coat hooks in the garage or on a mud room wall to keep heavy outer wear from taking up all the space in your hall closet.

Then, install a shoe rack near the front door or in the mud room to keep your boots from tracking in mud and melting snow. It’s much easier to occasionally wipe the wood, metal or plastic surface of a shoe rack every so often than to scrub mud out of the carpet!

INSTALL SHELVING
As winter comes to a close, items such as ice-melting salts, ice scrapers and other wintertime tools need a place to go. New garage storage systems complete with custom garage shelving and cabinets provide the perfect place to pack this gear away until you need it again next winter.

GO VERTICAL
Floor space is at a premium in the garage, so utilize vertical space with overhead garage storage racks and sliding metal bins. Place the least used items higher up to save room for more in-demand gear on lower shelves. Label bins to keep their contents organized and make it easier to find just what you’re looking for.

In addition to bins and garage shelving, make use of wall-mounted bike racks to keep your family’s bikes in peak condition as the weather becomes warm enough to ride. When mounted at eye-level, it’s easy to remove and replace your bike on the rack after each ride, conserving precious floor space in the garage.

Hang long, awkward items such as skis, snowboards, snow shovels and sleds on special wall-mounted hooks to keep them out of the way until next winter.

INVEST IN CLOSETS AND CABINETS
Some items you want to store in the garage are more temperature-sensitive than others. With sporadic, unexpected warm days making an appearance in early spring, it’s useful to store some items in more temperature-controlled garage closet systems or cabinets.
